“I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud and your sins like mist; return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Isaiah 44:22
How many clouds have hung in the sky only to be “blotted out” within a few hours. This is the picture God gives to His people of how their sins are removed from them. Truly, truly, nothing is too difficult for the Lord.
“The metaphor of “a cloud” has the same meaning as if the Lord had said that he will no longer pursue them in his displeasure, or punish them, because, when guilt has been remitted, they are reconciled; in the same manner as when the sky has become calm, the clouds which intercepted from the earth the light of the sun, are “blotted out” and disappear.” ~ John Calvin
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the cloud buster. His death was an atoning and substitutionary death. His life was a perfect and substitutionary life. His righteousness was put into our account. Our sin was blotted out only because the Lord Jesus took it upon His account. There can be no arbitrary removal of transgression. That would be completely contrary to God’s nature. Sin deserves death and must be punished. For the elect, this miraculously, mysteriously, and wonderfully was accomplished by Christ who took our sins upon Himself. What a Savior!
