Incentives
Monday, August 7th, 2006

It’s tough to follow up Lee’s last blog entry, but I’ll give it a shot. Oh who am I kidding, I can’t follow up $222,718! I may however be able to help you get a little piece of that pie.

Last week Juan and Lee talked about giving users a reason to register at your community. An incentive if you will. Private messaging, posting, searching, and chatting just aren’t enough. You’ve gotta have more! You’ve got to give members access to something exclusive. Something they won’t find at your competitors site. Laura talked last week about giving out free email addresses, this is a wonderful idea. But take it a step further. Megan from http://www.webmaster-forums.net offers 3 free months of hosting for new members. You may be able to work out some sort of deal with a company in your industry to offer free magazine subscriptions, coupons, an eBook, entry in to a giveaway. Depending on the topic of your community, you may be able to turn these incentives in to another revenue stream. Finding a company that will give free trials to your members and give you a percentage of the resulting sale. After you find an incentive remember to include a call to action. Just telling them about the incentive isn’t enough, get them to follow through. You want them to REGISTER right?! Nice big red letters “Register today and get 3 months of free hosting! Click Here”, “Join Our Community Now and Get Our Exclusive eBook!”.

No matter what you do, keep trying new things. You can’t maximize your monetization unless you are constantly trying new things! Don’t ever stop trying.

Offering Free Email Addresses – The Why and How
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Long ago, a few small, but growing sites figured out the benefits of offering free email addresses to their users. Perhaps you have heard of them? Yahoo!? Hotmail? Yeah, I figured you had heard of them, and while offering free email addresses may not have been the only reason for their success, it certainly didn’t hurt.

In a crowded marketplace, fledgling sites (especially forums) have to make themselves stand out to be noticed. These sites have to do something better than their competitors in order to gain ground. One such thing is offering free email addresses to members. It worked for Yahoo!, and it can work for you too.

First, the benefits. Why should you offer free email addresses to your members?

- It keeps members coming back. It’s really cool having yourname@yourfavoritesite.com, so members will want to use it. If they need to log in on your site to view their mail, that will keep them coming back. Once they are there to check mail, they might as well starting reading. Once they start reading… Well, you get the idea.
- It promotes your site. Each member that uses your domain email address puts your web address in front of more users – enhancing your brand. I don’t know about you, but if I see an interesting domain name when someone emails me, I check it out. A bit of free promotion never hurts!
- It’s a nice thing to do. It’s always good to find ways to be nice to your members. (Nice wins, trust me.)
- It’s not that hard to set up, so why not do it?.

So now that you are convinced, you need to decide how to go about it. There are a number of options, but there is no one size fits all solution. I will just give you some options, and you need to decide which is right for your forum.

Google Hosted Mail Beta – Google recently began a beta program for offering free hosted Gmail accounts. We have tested this service and it has been great. We have two beta accounts, though we aren’t using it to provide mail to our members at this point. (We are still in the planning phase of our upgraded memberships - a great way monetize your forum.) The downside to this is that they won’t be logging in to your site to get their mail, but the upside is that Gmail rocks, so users may be more likely to use it. You can always apply for the beta, and if you are accepted, you simply need to change your MX records and you are in!

Sponsored Mail from Everyone.net – This service was suggested to me a couple of different times by members at Lee’s Big Board Admin and a couple of other sites. I have not yet used this service, but the feedback I got was good overall I read their sales page and FAQ, and it looks like you need to have a “large” and mostly US-based member base. I am not sure what they mean by ‘large,’ but that might limit this for some sites. The downside is that there are ads, so if that is a concern, this isn’t the solution for you. I would love to hear feedback if anyone has used this service.

vBulletin Mail System (vBMS) – This one looks really cool to me because it totally integrates with vBulletin. While not everyone runs vBulletin, it is clearly the software of choice for big board admins, so many of Forum Trends’ readers are probably using it. You can check out all of the features on the site, and there is a forum for pre-sales questions. I have not used this product myself, but from browsing the site, it looks like a lot of people ditched the once popular, but now seemingly unsupported Hivemail product for this one. The main difference, as I understand it, is that vBMS runs from within vBulletin – it isn’t something that is added on. I would certainly give this one a second look. The integrated log in would be fantastic for encouraging those frequent returns to your site!

A few other possible options:
- @Mail
- Roundcube
- SocketMail
- Merak Mail Server

I would also like to point out that these email addresses don’t have to be free. As I mentioned earlier, a great way to monetize a forum is through paid memberships. These paying members would get upgraded features, like an email account. I would not advise a brand new forum to monetize in this way, but an established userbase is likely to welcome the chance to support their favorite site. Check out Lee’s Premium Membership page at Sprint Users for an example of this monetization method.

While none of us are likely aspiring to be the next free email provider to take over the net, offering free email addresses @yourdomain.com is a great way to build loyalty among members, promote branding, encourage return trips to your site, and above all, it’s totally doable with a bit of research and know how.

A Bit of Speed Never Hurt
Friday, July 14th, 2006

How many times have you dragged your feet on a project and either lost interest or got started too late? Did you ever consider how much money you have left on the table by not taking action a bit sooner? Are you resentful someone beat you to the punch?

I want to encourage all of the webmaster and forum admin that read this blog to be quick and to take action. I have found that speed is often one of the most important factors when it comes to having success on the web. I always push people to plan, plan, plan, but there comes a point we must take action and do something with our planning.

I have seen my good friend, Joel Comm, recently do this with 500 Words and I have seen myself do this many times in the past and now with EarnersForum.com. I spent time considering an idea, planned on how to promote it, and then jumped right in. Joel had 500 Words online within a few short days after seeing the 1000wordpage.com concept. Not only was he fast, he proved to be MUCH better. To top off the extra features and user friendliness of his site, he also had a promotion plan that took off as planned or even better than planned. It appears he will sell out all of his words and have a huge success on his hands. Shortly after seeing the success of his site, he also figured he could do quite well by selling the script he used at 500 words. What do you know? That certainly worked to and became an overnight success. Now, you can do the math as well, but the way I see it is that he made a minimum of $XX,XXX in under 2 weeks by being quick and a bit creative. What are you waiting for?

I figure if you can match a bit of speed with a bit of creativity, you can go a long way towards being another internet success story!

[How To] Get more traffic to your forum
Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Well everyone I’ve done some compiling of lists of great places to drive traffic to your forums. These are all free places to either submit your links, submit your news, submit your site, tag your site, or other mediums to drive traffic to your forums. Now please remember that before you do any of these make sure your forum is ready for visitors and you have enough content / interaction to keep some of this traffic as return visitors and your end goal would be to convert these visitors into active posting members. Also this traffic probably won’t be targetted traffic so don’t get mad when you don’t get a lot of signups. This list is intended to be for “jump starting” traffic flow, and quite possibly boosting your forum to the next level if you have something of quality to offer.

Visit each one of these sites and do what it takes to get your site out. And please remember to not spam any of these sites, submit information that is useful. You might not want to even submit your mainpage url but rather a link inside your forum, or even a link to an article you wrote that has your site link in it. The more creative you get the better your outcome will be.
