There is no secret formula to boost traffic. But there are many different outlets that can help you boost traffic. By far the best ways to boost traffic is by viral marketing. And most people think this is probably the hardest way to get your site out there. This could not be further from the truth. First of all, built into most forum softwares is a referral system. This allows your members to send out emails/IMs/blogs to their friends and try to recruit them for you, and they get a referral for doing so. Adding some sort of prize to the person with the highest referrals each month is always good to do.
